How to Safely Thaw Frozen Water Pipes and Prevent Catastrophic Winter Bursts
When Michigan temperatures plunge below 15°F, exposed pipes in crawl spaces, uninsulated exterior walls, and basements freeze solid. Here is how to thaw them safely without rupturing.

Water expands by approximately 9% as it transitions into ice. The rupture rarely occurs at the frozen point itself; rather, trapped ice creates extreme hydraulic pressure between the blockage and the closed faucet, bursting the pipe.
Step 1: Open the Cold and Hot Faucets. Opening the tap gives melting water and pressurized steam an escape route as you apply heat.
Step 2: Locate the Freeze Point. Inspect uninsulated exterior wall studs, basement rim joists, and crawl space plumbing. Look for frost on copper pipes or subtle bulging.
Step 3: Apply Gentle, Controlled Heat. Use a handheld hair dryer, portable ceramic space heater, or electric heat tape wrapped around the pipe. NEVER use an open flame blowtorch or propane heater, which causes explosive steam expansion and structural house fires.
Step 4: Keep the Main Water Valve Ready. Stand by the main shutoff valve while thawing. If a hidden fracture exists, water will spray forcefully the instant the ice plug releases.
